The Humanities Program is proud to sponsor several exceptional courses of study exclusively for first years. Apart from Directed Studies, an intensive introduction to the Western tradition of arts and letters, and Six Global Perspectives, a less intensive, cross-cultural introduction to the humanities, we also offer a range of more specialized first year seminars.
All first year courses require preregistration(Link is external) (Link opens in new window). This year preregistration opens August 9 and closes August 15.
Directed Studies
The program is three integrated full-year courses in Western Philosophy, Literature, and Historical and Political Thought. Each course meets weekly for one lecture and two discussion seminars, where small groups of students work closely with a professor. We take advantage of all that Yale has to offer.

Six Global Perspectives
Six Global Perspectives (6GPX) is a suite of seminars that introduces first-year students to the study of the humanities. Each course examines a theme through six case studies across times and cultures. All students participate in a Friday lab that introduces Yale’s resources and provides structured instruction on college-level writing.
