She held research fellowships at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies in Reykjavík and at Harvard University from 2010 to 2016.  Jóhanna is currently working on a number of projects, including a book called Valkyrie: Viking Women in Life and Legend, published in 2019 by Bloomsbury in London, and a long-term project on late medieval Icelandic literature and culture. She is also contributing to a documentary by Ash Thayer entitled Viking Women: The Crying Bones, which portrays women fighters in the Viking reenactment world.

Jóhanna’s research interests focus on Vikings, Old Norse-Icelandic sagas, mythology, and poetry, medieval manuscripts, late medieval Iceland, gender, and identity issues more broadly.
